Jump for Joy

Today, Owen made up a game called Jump for Joy. He found one of my scarves, and laid it down on the floor. Then the game was, to jump to the scarf, over the scarf, and keep jumping all the way over to the end table. We did this for quite awhile actually :) Then, we mixed it up a little, and tried running and skipping. Nothing better than skipping for joy!

Catching up

This post will be a bit haphazard as I recap several things I want to record. First of all, my sweet baby has graduated to his "big boy bed". Monday, July 25: Age 2 years, 11 months and 4 days. We had our regular routine where he napped in his crib. At some point during the afternoon, Owen said, ok, I'm ready for my big boy bed now! I said, ok, well we need to wait for daddy to come home to help us take the crib down and move the big boy bed into your room. We continued to talk about this for the remainder of the afternoon, and by the time C got home, he was really excited about it. So, we started clearing out the room.. We decided when the big boy bed went in, the toy shelf would come out. Mostly for space issues, but also to remove the temptation of getting out of the big boy bed to play. Owen was so excited, he got to help take out the hardware that keeps the crib together, and helped move the pieces out of the room. He also helped by using his red plastic hammer on the rails of the bed frame during the disassembly of the bed from the guest room. The most exciting part was of course, opening the package of the Thomas sheets. We have been talking about the Thomas big boy bed for almost a year now, and the new still hasn't worn off! He was very happy to learn that now he would get to have, not one, but TWO Thomas pillows as well. We got the sheets on, installed the Snug tuck pillow (instead of rails) and unfolded the new denim blue comforter. After a few celebratory "monkey jumps" on his bed, he wanted to snuggle right under the covers. Can I tell you how small he looked in this enormous full size bed. I just wanted to hold him close and not let go! When bedtime finally arrived, he got more and more apprehensive about the idea of actually sleeping in the bed. When we were settling down to read our story, he asked a few times to have his crib (now in multiple pieces in the hallway) returned to its former home. He was distraught as well because when the big boy came, it meant the end of "binkies". We reiterated the fact that all the rest of his bedtime friends.. froggy and tiger and a slew of other helpful animals were always welcome on the big boy bed, but binkies just really had no place. He really did have a difficult time that first night going to sleep. I went in several times to lay with him and reassure him that this indeed was a good thing, a big boy thing that happens. He asked several times to have his binkies back.. and at one point, I was standing outside his closed door with the binkies in tow, with my hand on the doorknob! But when I was there, he seemed to be resting. He never did cry about the binkies, and I didn't want it to be traumatic for him. He woke up one time during the night (well, 5am) a bit confused as to where in the world he was! I went in and laid down with him and he fell right back to sleep. I snuck back out and returned to my own big girl bed :) The next day for nap, he also asked for binkies, but again I just explained to him that we didn't use them in a big bed, and that everything would be ok without them! He needed some extra snuggle time then too, which I happily provided, and he was off to dreamland in a few minutes. And, here we are, a week and a half later... a binkie and crib free household.

Another small anecdote, a few days ago, I walked out of the bedroom one morning. I had my glasses on, my hair was in every direction. Wearing a oversized tee shirt and blue stretched out pajama pants. Owen looks at me, and says "Awww.. Mommy! How pretty are you!" That unconditional love thing is pretty amazing.

Potty all the time, potty all the time.

So apparently potty training has hit full gear at my house. I have actually lost track of how many times Owen has peed on the potty today, its upwards of 4 or 5! And, he went before his nap, a half hour into his nap (the famous stall technique) and then woke up dry, and peed again after! It is phenomenal.

We took Owen swimming today after he woke up from his nap, and it really wasnt the great time I have been imagining. I guess it will take a few times getting used to the pool. But he was all set, and I even had bought him a vest floatie thing, and he went armed with his new NEMO towel from Grandma. Then, about 20 minutes in, it started to rain. Overall, I had a good time though!

Yesterday, I was commissioned as a Stephen Minister at my church. If anyone reading this is interested in what that is, go to: http://www.stephenministry.org. So its a big deal for me, it was 50 hours of training, and Im so glad I took this step.

Tomorrow is a big day for our whole family. Owen goes to his first day of "summer camp" ie: summer preschool one day per week. I go for my braces removal (wahoo!) and C. has an interview with a local company. I'll update on all these happenings soon!

A break through?

I think we may have had a potty training break through last night! Although it may have started as a way to stall bedtime, it ended up being a success. I laid Owen down in his bed and he said, "Mommy, I want to go pee". As I never turn down requests to pee on the potty (they happen so infrequently), I got him up, stripped off the diaper and pants, and he sat on the potty. In a little bit, he was surprised when he actually did pee! He said "Mommy, I peeing!" It was a proud moment for both of us. :) Now, the act of peeing on the potty is not that novel, but the idea of him actually saying, "I want to go pee", and then going and doing it is a big step... it shows that he is becoming aware of his body in a way that gives him a little warning time to actually get to the potty. Wahoo!

That's what boys do

Twice today, I have been faced with the phrase... "Because that's what boys do, Mommy!" The first was when I asked him for the fifth time, to please stop pulling the folded t-shirts off the tables at Old Navy. The second was at lunch, "that's what boys do, Mommy, they fingerpaint with yogurt on the table". Maybe this is a developing gender role? Lets pray for his future wife :)

Had a rather challenging counseling session today.. still feeling a bit worn out. Its good to get the crazy out, I always say LOL.

So, were off to DC this weekend, it should be a great trip. We'll be driving, and this will be the longest car trip we've taken with Owen. My bag of tricks is stacked with new books (love my consignment store! they always have great books for cheeeeap), and the super cool new Viewmaster. He's been enthusiastic about this toy the few times he's seen it in the store, so lets hope it works for awhile in the car too.

Walk to the pond

Tonight after dinner we went on a walk down to the pond. Its just down the street, in our subdivision and has a paved path that is 0.6 mil around. At one point on the path there is a bridge. Apparently it is now a Troll Bridge. (Thank you, Dora.) It took me several minutes to convince Owen that the troll wasn't going to hear us, and it was ok to cross the bridge. Finally, our solution was to walk sideways across the bridge, because obviously, that is a quieter way to walk... Couldn't convince the dog to do this unfortunately... she was taking her chances on the troll I guess. Crisis solved.

P.S. Happy Syttende Mai to the Norwegians today!
